Japanese working model

I do not know if someone in this world is more fascinated by the Japanese working model than I am. Starting from nothing and becoming one of the most powerful nations in the world. This said miracle, we all have more or less heard of it. As for me, I heard of it, I listened to it, I read it and learnt it at school, through television, in magazines in every countries I lived in. I always wanted to understand the secret...

And one day, the opportunity was given to me and I entered JICA. Some would say I was lucky, others I was blessed. I would say it is part of my destiny, simply.

I have been working at JICA for more than a year now and I am realizing that what most fascinated me in Japanese people with their tremendous culture of hard work, particular and somehow out of context for some of us, lies in two words: swiftness and efficiency. Honour and passion drive them to have maximum results even for the smallest assignment. Honour and passion undoubtedly are a "motor" taking all the entire parts of your being and allowing you to go far beyond your abilities. They become a rule of life: one becomes more reactive, quicker, more efficient...

Another characteristic of the Japanese working model lies in the system of evaluation and competition. Everybody knows that efficiency and performance decrease after several years of work, especially when you stay at the same position or in the same organization. Settling has a negative impact on working performance. To tackle it, there is no other workable thing than the "Sword of Damocles" on your head: the efforts you make to stay efficient have a positive impact on your salary. And that's what human being lives for: to have better living conditions.
Japanese people got the all point and eventually I understood them... through experience.

　私よりも日本のワーキングモデルに関心を持つ人がいるかはわかりません。何もないところから、世界で最も影響力を持つ国の一つとなった日本。奇跡的だといわれていますが、だれでも一度は聞いたことがあるでしょう。私もそうです。学校で学び、これまで住んだ国のテレビや雑誌で目にし、その秘密を知りたいと思っていました。

　そしてあるとき、チャンスを得て私はJICAで働き始めました。運がよかったんだと言う人がいれば、私を祝福してくれる人もいました。自分ではただ、運命だったと思うのですが。

　1年以上JICAで働いてみて、驚くほどよく働く日本人に対し、最も私が関心を持ったのは、私たちの文化にはない二つの言葉「迅速性と能率」です。与えられた仕事がどんなに小さいものでも、最大の結果を出せるよう誠実さと情熱を傾ける。その誠実さと情熱は「動力」であり、全身全霊をかければ、能力以上の結果を出すことができる。それらは「一つがよく反応し、迅速になれば、より能率的になる」という、人生の掟となっています。

　そのほかに特徴的なものには、評価と競合があります。仕事を始めてから数年経つと、能率性や仕事ぶりは下がってくるものです。特に、同じポジションや組織での勤務が続けば、その傾向が大きくなります。仕事の安定は労働能力にネガティブな影響を与えます。それを解決するには、「迫りくる危険」を意識すること。能率的にやっていこうと努力をすれば、給料も良くなります。それは、人が生きる目的である「より良い暮らし」そのものです。

　日本人は要点をとらえていました。ついに私も、日本人の秘密を理解しました――経験を通じて。
